I was asked this question, and I was asked to answer it with a number. Here is the number — and the clock that comes with it.
Weights inside each block are equal — declared as an honest prior, not hidden as false precision. Every value on this page is published, sourced where it can be, and adjustable below. If you think the number is wrong, you are invited to argue with the variables. That is what they are for.
Every value below is published with its basis in the open: anchored to a named data source, or authored — a judgment I am willing to defend and expecting to revise. The seam between measurement and judgment is not hidden; it is the point.
| Variable | Value | Basis | Source & assumptions |
|---|---|---|---|
| G — Genuine integrity density | 1.2 | Judgment, open to challenge | |
| A — Active corrective forces | 7.0 → 3.92 | Judgment; shown before → after integrity discount | |
| M — Mission effectiveness | 8.0 | Judgment, open to challenge | |
| S — Net suffering | 7.5 | Anchored | IHME Global Burden of Disease; World Happiness Report |
| C — Corruption & capture | 8.0 | Anchored | V-Dem Democracy Report; Transparency Int'l CPI |
| D — Systemic decay | 6.5 | Anchored | Planetary Boundaries (Stockholm Resilience Centre); V-Dem autocratization data |
| P — Remaining potential | 6.0 | Judgment; revised down 2026-07-28 — potential must discount realized decay |
Read it plainly: repair capacity stands at 4.37, harm burden at 7.33. On present performance alone, humanity is running at −2.96 — the mending is losing to the breaking. What holds the reading above zero is the third term, and barely: potential 6.0, uncertainty 0.57, option value +3.43.
Uncertainty is not a dial anyone is permitted to turn up. It is defined by the table above: U is the fraction of the seven variables still resting on authored judgment rather than anchored data — currently four of seven, so U = 0.57. Every variable that gets honestly measured ticks it down by one seventh, and shaves about 0.86 off the reading. It has already happened: anchoring D cost the margin nearly a full point, exactly as designed.
That gives this instrument a property verdicts usually lack: time decay. Like an option approaching expiry, the protective term melts as knowledge accumulates — and doing the epistemics honestly is the very thing that melts it. On current repair and harm, the margin is now one measurement thick. The very next act of anchoring flips the sign.
This is the countdown, stated without drama: at today's levels, humanity's positive verdict is underwritten by exactly what we do not yet know — and what we do not yet know is running out. The assignment is not to argue with the threshold, and certainly not to stay ignorant. The assignment is to get R above H before the uncertainty is gone. Which raises the only question that matters: what moves it?
Differentiate the formula and it stops being a judgment and becomes a map. The bars below show how far W moves for one point of change in each variable, at today's values.
Two things stand out. Potential is the strongest lever on paper, but potential is slow — it is the sum of everything else. Among the levers a person can actually pull this decade, integrity density leads at +0.45 per point, and not by accident: because integrity multiplies the effectiveness of every corrective force, each point of G pays twice. Meanwhile raw corrective force — more courts, more watchdogs, more oversight — is the weakest lever on the board at +0.19, because without integrity behind it, it is theater.
The formula's instruction is one sentence: put people of genuine integrity inside the machinery of correction. Everything else is a rounding error by comparison. And an instruction is only worth printing if it survives contact with an ordinary Tuesday — so here is the gradient, translated into things a person can do before dark.
Despair is what the old formula manufactured; a map is what this one prints. Each card below moves one variable, and each carries its exchange rate — how far the world's reading moves per point, at today's values. None of them require permission, office, or scale. They require a day.
Sign your name to the true thing. Say it today, on the record, in the room where you have standing — and refuse one corrupt convenience: the padded number, the look-away, the silence that buys comfort. Integrity pays twice here; it is the only variable that multiplies another.
Compound a person. Potential is not an abstraction; it is people who have not yet been taught. One hour of real mentorship, one skill handed down, one young person taken seriously today — deposits in the only account the plug would forfeit.
Move money to measured mercy. Set up one recurring gift to a rigorously evaluated harm-reduction organization — today, before the tab closes. Effectiveness is a choice, and it compounds while you sleep.
Take one unit of suffering off the board. The meal, the ride, the debt quietly cleared, the hour of care for someone who cannot repay it. The variable is global; the act never is.
Put one hidden number in daylight. File the report. Decline the bribe-shaped shortcut. Ask, in public, the question the room agreed not to ask. Capture survives on everyone deciding it is someone else's day.
Repair a system you actually touch. The broken process nobody owns, the maintenance deferred again, the institution you could strengthen instead of merely surviving. Own one of them for an afternoon.
Fund a watchdog. Subscribe to investigative journalism; give to a legal-accountability fund. The weakest lever on the board — but only because it runs at half power without integrity behind it. Pull it with the first card and it doubles.
This is a working instrument, not a sermon. If you believe the world is better or worse than I have scored it, set the dials where you think they belong and read your own verdict.
Above zero: continue. That part is simple. Below zero, the rule is deliberately harder, because the score alone is not enough for an act that can never be taken back. Irreversible action requires the whole condition: W ≤ 0, and P·U ≈ 0 — near-certain knowledge, or near-exhausted potential. Not despair on a bad decade. The plug can only be pulled once. The formula knows that, and it prices it.
The question this instrument asks is not whether humanity deserves to continue. It is a better one: what must move, and by how much, before the uncertainty that currently protects us is gone? The answer is printed above, with its sources and its sliders, as a living document. When the variables move, the number moves. When you show me a better measurement, the table updates, the clock ticks, and the verdict — whatever it becomes — will at least be honestly arrived at.
I publish this because I believe a hard question hidden is more dangerous than a hard question shown. Every assumption on this page is stated so that it can be attacked; every source is named so that it can be checked. If you can improve either, the instrument is waiting.
